(Manager, Promoter, Festival Organizer,
Producer, Consultant)
For twenty years, Alex Boicel has been one
of America's leading independent promoters through Africa Mondo
Productions-a venue for numerous great world music artists. He has
promoted such internationally famous artists as Roberta Flack, Harlem
Gospel Choir, Shaggy, Hugh Masekela, Wyclef Jean, Salif Keita, Diblo
Dibala, Baba Maal, Alpha Blondy, Lucky Dube, Fela, Kassav, Juan
Luis Guerra, Eddie Palmieri, and many others.
Born in French Guyana in the city of Cayenne,
Alex moved to Montreal at the age of sixteen to help his father,
the famed Doudou Boicel, founder of the Montreal Jazz Music Festival
and the hottest 1970's Montreal club, the Rising Sun Jazz and Blues-still
discussed in history books today. After the experience he gained
at the right hand of such a master promoter as Doudou Boicel, Alex
was then able to open his own Café Creole, which saw six
years of success on the Montreal culinary scene.
During these early years, Alex Boicel began
to embrace the great diversity of cultures that comprises world
music. He absorbed the ancient alchemy of African rhythms, Latin
music, jazz, blues, soul-in short, all that comprises world music
now began to incubate in his soul, waiting for its moment to awaken
and be born in his career choice to support musical artists from
around the globe.
After ten years living in Montreal, his
vistas expanded to New York City where he moved to work with Larry
Gold at the now-famous Club SOB's (Sounds of Brazil). There he acquired
programming and production experience, working in- and out-of-house
events, and booking bands from Africa with the Third World Talent
Agency. In 1991, he founded Africa Mondo Productions and began to
produce, program, promote, and book international performers in
festival, campus, and other performing arts venues worldwide. A
year later he created the Africa Mondo Festival-a spectacular event
featuring unique and talented performers from the great continent
of Africa.
Boicel has brought to the forefront the
most popular world music acts at the Prospect Park Bandshell as
part of the Celebrate Brooklyn series. From a humble beginning,
the Africa Mondo Festival has expanded to a spectacular gathering
of unique sounds, foods, and colorful marketplace which attracts
over 10,000 people in a single afternoon. It is the highest attended
event in the park's summer concert series.
To expand his programming horizons and to
celebrate his African and Caribbean heritage, Boicel has joined
efforts with major promoters from Senegal, South Africa, Ghana,
the French Caribbean, and Guyana. Together they allow a richly diverse
Festival audience to discover the best global musical performers
and talents. These talents do not stay in New York City, however.
In 1994, under the banner of discerning and delivering diversity
within this specific Afro-Caribbean cultural background, Boicel
booked 60 drummers and 40 dancers to travel with the Rolling Stones
for their famous "Voodoo Lounge" tour.
Following this touring success, Boicel booked
the great diva of Senegal, Kine Lam, into Amsterdam with 90 musicians
from the Holland Symphony Orchestra. Boicel and Africa Mondo Productions
are committed to provide the public with quality events that educate,
entertain, and fulfill the specific needs of any audience or client.
Africa Mondo also develops and enhances the visibility of the acts
it represents and presents.
When you ask Boicel to find an artist or
to create a festival, his years of service to world music make him
most uniquely qualified to understand your needs to serve a particular
audience. He pulls together unique programs that surpass all expectations.
